All swing dance classes are offered on a drop-in basis so you are only charged for the lessons you show up to. You can pay on a nightly drop-in basis or we offer discounted package deals. All of this information can be found on our pricing page.
The Lindy Lab will be offering swing dance classes Wednesday nights between 7 and 10 and Thursday night from 7-8:30 at Triangle Dance Studio in the “Guest House” (See the Location page). Due to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Lindy Focus, we will be starting the December 4-week series early on November 28. This is a *temporary* space while we are working on finishing a new dance space which will sport hardwood floors, an improved sound system, and other amenities to better serve your swing dance class needs.
Due to space constraints, class size is currently limited to approximately 6 leads and 6 follows per class. To reserve your spot in class or view our current and future class schedule, you can click here to access our automated scheduling calendar.
June 2013 Classes
Tuesdays (June 4, 11, 18, & 25) with Jason & Mary Kyle
Lindy 2 (Passes, Turns, and Mixing Rhythms) – 6:30-8:00
This class will focus on taking your charleston based Lindy from Lindy 1 and mixing it into a wider variety of rhythms and shapes. Adding 6 count dancing into the mix as well as more passing based turns and learning how to effectively mix 6 and 8 (and other) count movements. This forms the basis for a lot of what you will see the experienced dancers doing, that is to say, a few simple shapes and movements that can be spun into an infinite variety of options.
Basics of Bal-Swing – 8:00-9:30
This will be a no-prior-Balboa experience required class focused entirely on the open position variant of Balboa known as Bal-swing. This class will build on the Out & In energy of Bal-swing to give you a solid foundation to build into the flashy side of Balboa. Crossovers, Lollies, Tossouts and more will be the order of the day and this class will set you up nicely for the anticipated return of Balboa Cram Sessions. We feel that most of the fancy stuff in Bal-swing is built on a few basic moves so we will finish this class making sure you feel comfortable in those moves and solid on lead/follow in them.
Wednesdays (June 5, 12, 19, & 26) with Jason & Lindsay
Lindy 1 (Charleston to Lindy) – 6:30-8:00
This class will start with examining Lindy’s roots in Charleston. We begin with several variations on 8-count footwork and building the framework that allows you to start creating your own variations in Lindy. This is also a great class for building speedy footwork and starting to dance at faster Lindy tempos. We are also field-testing a flipped classroom model for this, meaning we will give you video of the week’s lesson ahead of time, so you will be able to see the new material and play with it before you show up to class. If you are interesting in this class, you will find the video for week one at https://vimeo.com/61326221
Lindy 3 (Turns, Styling, and Speed) – 8:00-9:30
Building from Beginner into Intermediate levels of Lindy, this class expects that you are already comfortable (or on your way to comfortable) in your swingout and have a few turns and such under your belt. We will work on adding turns and building the top speed at which you can swingout so that the moderate tempos begin to easier and allowing more time to think, breathe, and add to the swingout. With this added space in the swingout, we’ll also talk more about how to add to what you’ve been doing and develop a style that fits the needs of your body and personal aesthetic as well as adapting to look and feel good as a partnership.
Sundays (June 9, 16, 23, & 30) with Matt & Chris
Please note that because these classes are an hour instead of 1.5 hours, they will be charged different at a straight $40 per class per person rate. If you have class cards you would like to use for them, we are happy to make that work as well.
Progressive Lindy 6:00-7:00
The original swing dance, taught with a focus on partnering and musicality. This will not be an arthur murray “your feet go here” type class, but please be familiar with some level of east coast swing and triple steps. From there, our talented crew will take you from walking in to swinging out in just a few short weeks.
Progressive Charleston 7:00-8:00
The predecessor of The Lindy Hop, this flashy dance from the 20′s began as a solo dance and grew into the partnered variant that influences our Lindy today. Whether you’re brushing up or just getting your feet off the ground for the first time, this class will help you spark a love for the bouncing kicking rhythms. Charleston is also an excellent dance for getting used to higher speeds and having a way to catch your breath in the midst of swinging out.
The Lindy Lab teaches from a unique “movement based” approach to swing dancing. Rather than focusing on learning moves, we aim to teach you first about the components that make those moves. By learning a few simple building blocks, you can learn a variety of dance concepts faster while also developing the ability to create your own moves and personal style. We feel that most people get into swing dancing for reasons of fun and we make sure that our classes help you to continue growing your skills without losing that fun aspect.
[...] upcoming Eastern Balboa Championships, Jason Sager and I will be teaching a pure Balboa class for The Lindy Lab! Classes will run for four Wednesdays, from October 3 through October 24, 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. [...]
